In 2008, we introduced the Re-Routt™ Collection, named in honor of Routt County Colorado where Big Agnes is headquartered. This is a collection of products constructed using recycled fabrics, fills and hardware and/or environmentally sensitive manufacturing practices. We are dedicated to expanding our use of recycled materials to help divert waste from landfill. The collection includes products in all categories of our product line. Look for the Re-Routt logo to identify these products. Reduce, Re-use, Re-Routt.
In our first year of using recycled components in our products we diverted approximately 500,000 16oz PET plastic bottles (standard soda bottle size) from landfills. All told, this equates to more than 100 cubic yards worth of fill. For 2009, we have expanded our use of recycled materials and expect to divert even more. Look for this bottle symbol near our Re-Routt Collection products to see the estimated number of 16oz recycled bottles used to produce each item.
Big Agnes supports environmentally sustainable and safe manufacturing methods. We were one of the first tent companies to use poles featuring DAC's new Green Anodizing™ process and we incorporate these poles and Green Anodized J Stakes in our 2009 tent line. Tent poles are shiny and smooth because of the chemical polishing stage in the anodizing process, which requires two very toxic chemicals, phosphoric and nitric acid. DAC has perfected a better process that is safer for our environment and its employees by eliminating the need for the polishing stage and these two hazardous chemicals. Additionally, they significantly reduce waste water by recycling water throughout the rinsing process. Look for the DAC Green Anodizing logo whenever these poles and stakes are used.
