Red Dirt Trail (north of Steamboat near Mad Creek) is now just a double-track dirt road, but it used to see some traffic. Prior to the 1920’s, this area was a popular hunting grounds, where elk and deer abounded. Local families still depend on the meat rendered from their annual forays up the Red Dirt Trail to sustain them through the long winters. At a fraction of the weight of old-school, musty canvas hunting tents, you won’t need Hager’s mule to drag this one into the backcountry.
